Diwali means guests, puja, family drives and plenty of photos next to the car. Use this Diwali car cleaning checklist to cover everything, from paint and glass to mats and dashboard, without missing a spot.

Diwali car cleaning checklist at a glance

  • Exterior wash, including roof, bumpers and number plates
  • Bird droppings, tar spots and tree drips removed
  • Glass and mirrors cleaned inside and out
  • Tyres and wheels cleaned, tyre pressure checked
  • Rubbish cleared, seats and carpets vacuumed, mats washed
  • Dashboard and plastics dusted and refreshed
  • Boot emptied and cleaned

Each item is explained below, with the Mobidoi package that covers it.

Exterior: paint, roof and bumpers

Start from the top. The roof collects the most dust, and dirt runs down onto the sides.

  • Wash the whole car, including the roof, lower doors and bumpers.
  • Open the doors and wipe the door jambs. Guests see them when they get in.
  • Clean the number plates and the badges, where dust collects in the gaps.
  • Remove bird droppings and sap gently. Our guide on removing bird droppings and tree sap shows how.

If your paint looks dull or swirled, Diwali is a good time for paint work. Our Detailing package, ₹999 (hatchback) / ₹1,099 (sedan & SUV), includes compound rubbing and wax treatment.

Glass and mirrors

Clean glass makes the whole car look sharper, and it matters for night driving to see the lights.

  • Clean the windscreen inside as well as outside. The inside builds up a haze that causes glare at night.
  • Wipe the side mirrors and the rear-view mirror.
  • Lift the wiper blades and wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth.
  • Top up the washer fluid.

Tyres and wheels

  • Wash the wheels to remove brake dust and road grime.
  • Clean the tyre sidewalls. A clean black tyre makes the car look finished.
  • Check tyre pressure before festival drives to relatives' homes. Your car's recommended pressure is in the owner's manual or on a sticker near the driver's door.

Interior: seats, carpets and mats

  1. Clear out rubbish, old receipts and things you don't need.
  2. Take out the mats, clean them, and dry them fully.
  3. Vacuum the seats, seat gaps and carpets.
  4. Wipe door panels and handles.
  5. Empty and clean the boot. You'll need the space for gifts and sweets.

If seats are stained or the car has a smell, a quick clean won't be enough. Interior Deep Cleaning costs ₹1,499 (hatchback) / ₹1,599 (sedan & SUV) and covers seats, the roof lining, carpets, door panels and stain removal.

Dashboard and plastics

Dust the dashboard, vents, steering wheel and centre console. Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth for vent slats.

Choose a matte finish for the dashboard rather than a very glossy one. A shiny dashboard can reflect onto the windscreen and cause glare.

Super Wash + Polish costs ₹499 (hatchback) / ₹599 (sedan & SUV) and includes dashboard and plastic polish. Car Exterior & Interior Polish, at ₹599 (hatchback) / ₹699 (sedan & SUV), includes them too.

Before your vehicle puja

Many families do a vehicle puja around Diwali or Dussehra. A few small steps protect the paint:

  • Clean the car before the puja, not after.
  • Lay a clean cloth on the bonnet before placing a garland or puja items on it.
  • Wipe off kumkum, haldi and wax drips the same day. Left in the sun, they can stain the paint.
  • Keep diyas and incense away from the car's paint and plastic trim.

After Diwali: firecracker residue and smog

Firecracker ash and Delhi's post-Diwali smog leave a gritty film on cars. Don't wipe it off dry, as the grit can scratch the paint.

Rinse or wash it off instead, and park away from where people burst crackers if you can. Our guide to car care in Delhi's smog season covers this in more detail.
