Which scratches can be removed at home?
Car paint has layers. On top is a clear coat. Below it are the colour coat, the primer and then the metal.
Compound rubbing works on the clear coat. So it can level scratches that sit in that top layer, but not ones that go deeper.
A simple check: run your fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail does not catch, the scratch is likely in the clear coat. If it catches, the scratch is deeper.

We would rather tell you the truth than take your money for a job that will not work. A body shop or paint repair is the right choice if:

- Your fingernail catches deeply in the scratch
- The panel is dented or the bumper is cracked
- There is rust around the scratch
- Paint has chipped or peeled off
