Car Washing in Society and Basement Parking: What to Check First

Every housing society sets its own rules for washing cars in its parking areas, so check with your RWA before you book. Ask about basement washing, water use, timings, drainage and how service staff get through the gate.

Washing a car in your society parking is usually possible, but the rules differ from one society to the next. This guide lists what to ask your RWA or estate office, and how a doorstep car wash can work within those rules.

Why societies have car wash rules

Your parking slot is yours, but the floor, drains, water and power around it are shared. Car washing affects all of them, so many societies set rules.

  • Water bills: common taps are paid for by all residents.
  • Safety: wet, soapy floors in a basement can be slippery for people and vehicles.
  • Drainage: basement drains may lead to sumps or pumps that can clog with mud and foam.
  • Neighbours: water and foam can run into the next slot, or onto someone else's car.
  • Security: guards need to know who is entering and why.

Delhi's water situation

Water can run short in Delhi in summer. In May 2024, during a shortage, All India Radio reported that the Delhi Jal Board would act against washing cars with pipes. Violators faced fines for wasting water (source).

Rules and enforcement can change, so check the current position with your RWA. Either way, it makes sense to avoid washing with a running hose.

What to ask your RWA before booking a car wash

  1. Is washing allowed in the basement? Some societies allow it, some allow only waterless or dry methods, and some ban it.
  2. Is there a set place to wash? A few societies have a wash area or allow washing only in open or stilt parking.
  3. Which water can be used? Ask whether common taps may be used, or whether water must come from your flat or the service provider.
  4. Can power points be used? Some cleaning machines need electricity. Check whether parking-area sockets are allowed.
  5. What times are allowed? Societies often limit work to certain hours to avoid noise and traffic in the parking.
  6. How do service staff enter? Ask about the visitor register, gate passes, ID checks or any visitor app approval.
  7. Is there a list of approved vendors? Some RWAs only allow registered service staff.
  8. Who cleans up? Find out what the society expects about water, foam and dirt left on the floor.

Ask for the rules in writing, or a message from the RWA, so the guard at the gate has the same information you do.

Which wash method fits strict society rules?

MethodWaterWhere it usually fits
Waterless washLowestBasements and slots where running water is not allowed; only for light dust
Bucket washModerate, no hoseOpen, stilt and some basement parking
Foam wash with rinseHighestOpen parking or a wash area with good drainage

For the pros and cons of each, read foam vs waterless vs bucket wash. If you use waterless methods, our guide on whether a waterless wash is safe explains the right technique.

How a doorstep car wash works in a society

  1. Share the details. Give the provider your society name, tower, parking level and slot number.
  2. Tell them the rules. Pass on what your RWA allows: method, timings, water, power and entry process.
  3. Inform the gate. Tell the guard or add the visitor on your society's system so staff are not held up.
  4. Leave access. Make sure the car can be reached on all sides and someone can share keys if the interior is included.
  5. Check the slot after. Look for water or dirt left behind, and give feedback early.

For regular washes, a monthly plan helps. The same arrangement repeats each visit, and guards get used to the routine.

Getting several cars washed together

If neighbours want their cars washed too, a group booking can be simpler for the RWA to approve. It means one provider, one schedule and one point of contact.

Mobidoi's Bulk Bucket Wash costs ₹20 per car, for 20 or more cars at one location. See our society car wash page for details.

Ask a question
Can I get my car washed in my society's basement?
It depends on your society. Some allow it, some allow only low-water methods, and some do not allow it at all. Ask your RWA first.
Which car wash method uses the least water?
A waterless wash uses the least, followed by a bucket or rinseless wash. Washing with a running hose uses the most.
Can my RWA stop a car wash vendor from entering?
Societies set their own rules for entry and for use of common areas. If you are unsure, ask your RWA how service staff can be approved.
Do I need to give water or electricity for a doorstep wash?
It depends on the provider and the method. Mobidoi confirms on WhatsApp whether anything is needed from your side.
How can our society book a wash for many cars?
Mobidoi's Bulk Bucket Wash is priced per car for 20 or more cars at one location. Message us on WhatsApp with the number of cars.
