Air fresheners only cover a bad smell for a while. To remove a bad smell from your car for good, you need to find where it's coming from and deal with that. Here's how.
Why does my car smell bad?
The type of smell is a good clue to its source:
| Smell | Likely source |
|---|---|
| Sour or rotten | Spilled milk, juice or food under a seat or in a seat gap |
| Musty or damp | Wet mats or carpet, often after rain or a water leak |
| Musty only when the AC is on | Moisture and growth in the AC system or a dirty cabin air filter |
| Stale smoke | Cigarette or bidi smoke absorbed by seats, roof lining and carpets |
| Wet dog or animal | Pet hair and dander in the fabric |
| Sweaty or gym kit | Clothes, shoes or bags left inside, or sweat on fabric seats |
If you smell petrol, gas or something burning, don't treat it as a cleaning problem. Get the car checked at a workshop first.
Step 1: Find the source
Most bad smells come from somewhere you can't see at a glance. Check these spots with a torch:
- Under the front seats and along the seat rails
- Between the seat cushion and backrest
- Door pockets, cup holders and the glovebox
- Under the floor mats, and the carpet beneath them
- The boot, and the spare wheel well, where water can collect
Press your hand into the carpet in a few places. A damp patch tells you where the musty smell is coming from.
Don't forget child seats. Crumbs and spilled milk collect in the straps and under the cushion, out of sight. Take the seat out and check underneath it too.
Step 2: Clear out rubbish and take the mats out
Remove every wrapper, bottle and forgotten bag. Then take all floor mats out of the car.
Wash rubber mats with water and a mild cleaner. Shake out fabric mats, clean them, and dry them fully in the sun before putting them back.
Step 3: Vacuum and clean the spill
- Vacuum seats, carpets and seat gaps thoroughly.
- Blot fresh spills with a dry cloth. Don't rub, which spreads them deeper.
- Clean the spot with a mild fabric or upholstery cleaner and a damp cloth.
- Don't soak the seat or carpet. Too much water creates a new musty smell.
- Dry the area well with a clean towel.
Milk is the hardest spill to deal with. If it has soaked into the foam under the seat fabric, surface cleaning may not be enough.
Step 4: Dry the car and let it breathe
Smells grow in damp, closed spaces. Park in a safe sunny spot and leave the windows open for a while to air the car out.
To absorb lingering odour from dry carpets, sprinkle baking soda, leave it overnight, then vacuum it all up. A bag of activated charcoal under a seat also helps absorb odour.
Why air fresheners alone don't fix it
A strong air freshener hides the smell for a few days, then the two mix together. The source is still there, and in Delhi heat a closed car brings it back quickly.
Use a mild freshener only after the car is clean and dry, if you like one at all.
What if the smell comes from the AC?
A musty smell that appears when you switch on the AC usually comes from inside the AC system, not the cabin.
- Check the cabin air filter. Your owner's manual says where it is and when to replace it.
- Before parking, switching off the AC but leaving the fan running for a short while helps dry the system.
- If the smell stays, get the AC system checked at a workshop.
AC vent cleaning and ozone treatment are not part of our cleaning packages. Interior cleaning still helps if the smell has spread into the fabric.
When to book interior deep cleaning
Deep cleaning makes sense when the smell has soaked into the fabric, not just sitting in the air. Common cases:
- An old spill that has dried into a seat or carpet
- A musty smell after monsoon water got into the cabin
- Smoke smell in seats and the roof lining
- Pet smell in seats and carpets
Our Interior Deep Cleaning costs ₹1,499 (hatchback) / ₹1,599 (sedan & SUV). It covers upholstery, the headliner, floor liners and carpets, door panels, and spot and stain removal.
For a lighter refresh, Car Dry Wash + Interior costs ₹399 (hatchback) / ₹499 (sedan & SUV) and includes interior and mats cleaning.
If water is getting into your car, fix the leak first. Blocked drains and worn door seals are common causes. Otherwise the smell will return.
